...number of heraldic reference books, but have never been officially recognised by the College of Arms. When Richard Drakeford was appointed High Sheriff of Staffordshire in 1753 he tried to have the arms registered but was told by John Warburton, Somerset Herald, in a letter which has survived in the Staffordshire Record Office, that ‘their is neither Armis, or Name of Drakeford, either here or in any other Office of record, or MSS of Authority whatsoever. Without such Sanction no Familys be they ever so antient can properly be stiled Gentlemen of Arms &c.’
